I first found out about them when I was a freshman in high school from a girl in my japanese class. She was a HUGE fan of Dir en Grey and even had mimic Shinya's braids from their Withering to Death era. We became friends and she showed me some music videos of them at work. As soon as I heard the song Kodou I was in love. Before highschool I was always restless about music. I kept listening to different genres, trying to find the music that would click with me and as soon as I heard Dir en Grey I was instantly hooked. My love for music skyrocketed to an even greater scale.
Even though I can never say I've been a fan since they we're in their VK era, I adore every piece of music and every word of their songs. I admire the way Kyo would sing with such emotion in every song and of course the playings of Kaoru, Die and Toshiya in string. But what I love most is how Shinya play his drums. I can't really explain it but whenever I listen to a song from them I always concentrate on the drums xD
One of the most treasured memories for me was when I went to my first Dir en Grey concert in San Francisco. The excitement I felt standing in line waiting to get in, the nervousness I felt as I waited for them to come out and play, then the utter awe I felt at actually seeing them play right in front me. Even now as I type this the feeling of remembering that day is really overwhelming, my hearts just bursts with happiness at just the thought of it.
All in all I'm satisfied with whatever direction Dir en grey would go to, because even though they would changed their looks, their style and etc, I can still feel the emotion they had poured into every song. And frankly,,,that's enough for me. =3
